Skilled Migrants already in Australia may hold visas with work rights such as unrestricted, part time or temporary work arrangements. You can check a visa holder’s work rights using the Home Affairs Visa Entitlement Verification Online (VEVO) system.
Visa types
Student and Graduate visas
A Subclass 500 Student visa allows the holder to work up to 48 hours per fortnight for the duration of study.
A Subclass 485 Temporary Graduate visa grants the holder unlimited work rights up to two years after graduation.
Short stay Holiday Visas
A Subclass 417 or Subclass 462 – Working Holiday Maker visa grants the holder unlimited work rights for six months with one employer.
Skilled Permanent Visas
A Subclass 189 Skilled Independent or Subclass 190 Skilled Nominated visa are permanent visas with unlimited work rights.
Regional Work Visas
A Subclass 491 Skilled Work Regional (provisional) visa is for work in regional areas. The whole of Tasmania is classified as regional, and this visa last for 5 years, with a pathway to permanent residency through the subclass 191 Permanent Residence (Skilled Regional) visa.
A Subclass 887 Skilled Regional visa is a permanent visas with unlimited work rights.
Employer Sponsored Visas
The Subclass 494 Skilled Employer Sponsored Regional (Provisional) visa and Subclass 482 Skills in Demand visas allow unlimited work rights as long as the work is connected to the sponsoring employer (some exemptions apply). This visa last for 5 years, with a pathway to permanent residency through the subclass 191 Permanent Residence (Skilled Regional) visa.
A Subclass 186 Employer Nomination Scheme visa allows unlimited work rights as long as the work is connected to the sponsoring employer for two years. This is a permanent visa.
Temporary bridging visas
There are several types of bridging visas that allow you to stay in Australia after your current visa ends and you are waiting for your next one to be processed.
