Some occupations on the Tasmanian Onshore Skilled Occupation List (TOSOL) say a skills assessment is not available for this occupation, does this mean I don't need a skills assessment to be nominated if I am working in that role?
  • No, all applicants must have a skills assessment for a subclass 190 visa eligible occupation to be nominated for subclass 190 Skilled Nominated visa. Details of these occupations can be found on the Department of Home Affairs website.
  • If lodging a TOSOL option 190 ROI, an applicant who holds a skills assessment for “342411 Cabler” may be working in any role in the 3424 Telecommunications Trades Workers group. This could involve working as a “342414 Telecommunications Technician” to meet the subclass 190 nomination requirement, even though there is no skills assessment for that particular role. They must however have a skills assessment for one of the occupations in that same group.
I have a student visa and can only work 20 hours per fortnight. Is part-time work acceptable?
  • Yes, the minimum requirement for the Tasmanian Skilled Employment pathway is 20 hours work per week regardless of current visa.
Can I still be nominated if I have worked for 12 months for an average 10 hours per week?
  • No, your employment must have averaged at least 20 hours per week over a six-month period (or three months if applying for subclass 491 nomination and you have a TOSOL-listed occupation and employment role).
  • If you apply for nomination in the Tasmanian Skilled Graduate pathway, employment of at least nine hours per week will be recognised in relation to meeting priority attributes for that pathway.
My visa expires soon. Can you waive the six-month work requirement?
  • No, applicants must the minimum requirements for nomination.
  • You may be eligible for subclass 491 nomination after working for three months if you have a skills assessment and related work included in the Tasmanian Onshore Skilled Occupation List.
Can I run my own business and employ myself to be nominated in the Tasmanian Skilled Employment (TSE) pathway?
  • Yes, if you co-own your business with someone other than your spouse, and have a skills assessment related to your business, you may be eligible in the TSE pathway after 12 months of business operation.
  • If your skills assessment is not related to your business, you may qualify for the Tasmanian Business Operator pathway.
I have a skills assessment for Chef but a Certificate III/IV Commercial Cookery gained through recognition of prior learning. Is this a problem?
  • No, while we do not recognise qualifications gained through online courses or Recognition of Prior Learning, your Chef skills assessment would meet the nomination requirement.
I am working in a ANZSCO 4-5 role. Do I have to complete a Certificate III?
  • For ANZSCO 4-5 roles, you must have either a Certificate III qualification related to your role or at least 12 months experience, whichever is relevant to your occupation on ANZSCO. For example, if you have worked for 12 months as an aged and individual support worker, delivery driver, housekeeping attendant or dairy cattle farm worker, you will meet this minimum requirement without having a Certificate III.
  • Where ANZSCO does not list a qualification or experience for an occupation Migration Tasmania requires you to have a related AQF Certificate III qualification or one year of relevant Australian experience.
